shakudo fan necklace with herons

A rare shakudo necklace constisting of 16 panels in the shape of fans mounted with gold. Each fan is decorated with a flying crane and flowers. The crane is a symbol of luck, longevity and fidelity, European or Japanese, made for the European market circa 1875 when Japan was highly fashionable.

Shakudo is an alloy of copper that was treated to show a blue-black patina and was used in many Japanese decorative objects such a swoards and netsuke, the shakudo was further decorated with other metals such as here with silver (cranes) and gold (flowers).
