Halley's comet brooch

Halley's comet brooch

Here is a very pretty example of a Halley’s comet brooch, all rose cut diamonds open set in silver, the tail with floral decorations (later conversion to pendant with new brooch fitting), England, 1835.

Halley’s Comet is named after Sir Edmund Halley who discovered a comet, which he thought would circle the sun every 75 years and it did and was therefor called after the astronomer. When it next appeared in 1835 the sightings was fanatically commemorated with jewelry like this little pin.

dimension: 3 x 1.7 cm.
